So my horse was diagnosed with chondromalacia, basically arthritis in both stifles. He's currently out in a small paddock as was box walking with his stable. He's calmer outside, fine being alone too as long as he can see other horses. But come to winter time, I dunno what to do. I have a stable currently for him, but I and the vet thinks that him being outside will be better for him, as even if it's cold, moving around is better than cold and not moving, and if he is on stabled livery over winter he'll be in the stable a lot. He will get out for a few hours a day but that length of time will deprnd on the weather. If I can change him to grass livery depending on space, he'll have a large field to stay in, other horses for companionship and can move around a lot. My only worry is if he will cope. I think realistically he will, but of course I'm a typical owner who is fretting over nothing no doubt. Anyone else had a horse that moved to grass livery with no stable and coped fine? He will have shelter in the form of trees and pretty much every weight of rug possible to keep him warm. Usually he actually gets too warm even in winter, although he had more weight on him then and I'm trying to keep him slim to avoid pressure on his joints. Will it work? I just need people to tell me I'm worrying over nothing basically. ☺️
