One of my fields is about 4 acres I think and I graze it spring and autumn, until as late as possible (until it?s water logged!) My problem is I?ve had to sign a contract as the farm are on a conservation scheme. This means I?m not to top or spray it. I can Harrow, however our harrows are small quad type ones and not man enough I don?t think to get through the weeds and 2ft deep buttercups. I can roll but the farm has bought new massive rolls that can?t get here! (Bad access) I let other horses graze it to death over winter in the hope this spring the grass would be minimal! My horses don?t need much so I?ve fenced it in half but poo picking is virtually killing me due to the length of buttercup and how rutted it?s been left having had horses out all winter. The barrow is near impossible to push! So, plan 1. Maybe get some sheep? I don?t know much about what?s involved here though. Would they eat much grass/weeds? Plan 2 stop trying to clear it daily, they will only be here another few weeks and when they come back in autumn they can have the ungrazed half and I *hope the buttercups will be gone enough to Harrow the grazed half to get rid of the poo?!! Any other ideas? This conservation scheme is actually proving bit of a nightmare!
