My horse loads without turning a hair every single time... never a problem asking him to load on any type of horsebox. He also travels well in company. The problem arose when I tried to travel him alone. On the first trip he travelled really well, ate hay and was calm. We even had to stop as half way to our clinic we realised he hadn't been tied properly and was loose. He hadn't moved though and was happy enough. Did the clinic, travelled home no issue. The second time he was a little more noisy and moved a bit but nothing too much. We hacked with friends and he loaded well but was a little hesitant to stand still when I closed the partition. He traveled home well, we had to pass a string of about 15 yearlings (racehorse country!) many of whom were calling but he was totally fine. The third time he travelled well to a XC schooling venue, met up with a friend and had a great time. He loaded well, as usual, but tried to barge his way back off which I stopped him doing. By the time we drove out of the car park I had seen his knees in the camera twice and he had reared. After that I didn't try again. I had a rear facing lorry with a breast partition and I was terrified he'd get a foot over - intentional or not. The horsebox got sold as he then had over a year off through injury and part of that was 3 months box rest. I think that's helped him become more independent... I did wonder if the travel problems were actually stemming from a separation anxiety problem? He's now back in full work and I'm now having a box built with a long stall so really want to try and get over this solo travel issue. My big question is... is it actually possible??? I can understand the many different ways you can train a horse that's difficult to load but how can you train one that's very happy to load but difficult to travel or that rears??? I really want to get this right. My dream is that one day I will be able to put him on my horsebox, drive wherever we want to go, do what we want and have some fun. Be independent 🏇
