Puppy growth - medium sized dogs

This isn't one of my pups but someone i know of, pup is 4 months oldA few weeks back the pup went to the vets as a front leg was flicking out to the side from the wrist when the pup was running. Their vets spoke with a specialist who advised 2 weeks crate rest.Pup then seemed ok for a while.Now the pup has been back to the vets and vet didn't want to x-ray the pup but the owner insisted.The pup has one specific bone in both front legs which are growing too fast, they are now being referred to a specialist to have his front legs operated on.I don't have any further or more specific information than the above.What could cause bones to grow too fast?A quick search shows up overnutrition but i wonder if anyone else could add to this with any other reasons.
