Legal people... defamation advice

This will be a rather vauge hypothetical post so if possible bare with....I sold a horse quite a few months ago, rising 4 advertised as so. The people who bought it have kept it in unsuitable conditions, lied about their knowledge and the help they were going to recieve and have had prooblems with said horse.I have recently found out they have being rumours about me as a "dodgy dealer", saying that they were told the horse was 6 and some other things which are compleatly untrue. I still have the orginal adverts and details of the horse's passport etc so I can prove that was honest. More over I am really upset and angry. The horse was lovely with great potential and has been ruined. I have seen it today (from a distance) and it has lost a significant amount of weight. I truely believe that i went above and beyond to help the people... giving them written information on the horse such as diet, what tack it wears and lending them tack. They also asked for and paid for lessons to help but they cancelled the lessons saying they would rearrange and never have.I am considering suing for defamation. I understand it would be a complicated case though, especially proving loss on my part. Has anyone heard of anything like this before?Ideally I would like the horse back but cannot afford to buy it back for the price I sold it, and it is now a mess so probably worth far less.
