My newly backed three year old did his first spook today. It's always good to get the first one under your belt, so you know what you are dealing with. There isn't a single horse who hasn't spooked at the same place when a cyclist comes up the road, which they look down on from some way above the cyclists' heads. And he walked across a tarpaulin a few minutes earlier, so we know he's not a naturally spooky horse already :)I couldn't stop him spinning away, but he did it pretty slowly and didn't go very far. And I was able to turn him back and face the cyclist, who was kind enough to talk to us so he could figure out that it was a human and not a horse eating monster. He's almost working on the track, we're already in shoulder in past things he wants to look at, has a trot transition, seeks down and forward for a contact and is going to be the easiest horse ever to get to work on the bit. And we've only done a few five minute sessions and now I'm only riding every three days, and I don't lunge before getting on, either.I'm chuffed to bits with him.
