Schooling for a novice pony and rider combination

Although I have ridden for many years I am still very novice as I have only hacked ( same horse for 20 years) and never really had formal lessons.I have now bought a 6 year very green pony who apart from a little hacking has done nothing. I know a novice pony and rider is not an ideal combination but he is very quiet and willing. We have started having lessons ( I per week for 45 mins) and my riding is improving and I feel we are making progress. I do not however have access to a school except for the lesson so I have to practise what we have learned out hacking . I am wondering though would it be fairer to him and would we progress quicker/better if I had a professional school and teach him rather than the pair of us leaning together ( albeit with an instructor). He is very forgiving but I don't want spoil or confuse him by my inept efforts whilst I am learning too.
