Good morning! :)My mare is currently ridden in a slotted port mouth kimblewick as she is very strong when we have had a gallop. I've found lately though that she has been sticking her head down when we are going for it which makes it really hard to pull her back up again and if the chain is tight, she has occasionally stuck her head down to throw in a few bucks which isn't particularly fun at high speed. I decided to try her in a single joint dutch gag only on one ring down from the ordinary snaffle. We only went round the block on Sunday so walk and trot but she went beautifully, I just felt like she was holding herself differently and slowing her down was easier. Yesterday I took her on a proper hack and on the way out, it was lovely again, she was so relaxed, not as spooky as normal but this could just be coincidence, we even had a canter on a loose rein and it was just really nice, bouncy and steady. Then we came to the big strip, as soon as she upped a gear, she just went, and we had our normal gallop where I let her go for it but when I tried to pull her up again, she slowed for half a second and just dropped gear and carried on going. It took a little while to pull her up and partly because she was going to stop anyway as we were coming to the end but I couldn't slow her down at all and I hated feeling like I was having to use all my weight on her mouth. After that, I kept her slow but she gets joggy heading home anyway, it wasn't too bad slowing her down when she broke into canter a few times then but I think if I had let her go, I would have had no chance. Perhaps it was just a coincidence that she felt like she was going nicely in it as I only used it twice. Anyway, I've put the kimblewick back on now but I just wondered if there is something else that doesn't feel like I'm having to pull on a brick wall when I really need the breaks?I rarely have to use the bit too much but when I'm doing a flat out gallop, my voice and actions don't do anything!
