I'm going to be completely honest here and say that as lovely as foals are, they're an unbelievable amount of work too. Yes, they're gorgeous to look at, but they can also make you want to cry with frustration. They have a way of making you feel completely out of your depth sometimes, when you realise that all of the things you take for granted, like having horses who lead, are things that you have to be responsible for teaching them, even though you have no idea how! And yet, I don't think I've ever experienced a feeling of pride quite like the one my little Flower foal can give me. She's a quirky soul - 100 percent Welsh and not at all cob-like - but God, she loves to please. She's a horse that thrives on spending time with you, that loves to learn, and that will try her absolute damnedest to do what you're asking of her. When you do have an issue, it's usually because her go-to reaction when she can't understand something is to worry, but when she gets it right - well, she's certainly a clever one! After having a real stress earlier in the week about having to put her back with her mum, I admit that I thought we'd be back to square one in some ways, but this baby horse has surpassed my wildest expectations over the last couple of days. She and Sixpence ended up spending 48 hours inside as Flower really wasn't happy about walking on the very rutted ground. Taking her in, I expected a few baby tantrums and some calling for her mum. Turns out I just wasn't giving her enough credit. She walked in with the wind howling all around her, settled straight down with her hay, and didn't give me a moment's worry. Image: https://i.imgur.com/eAyH1zJ.jpg I know it sounds like no big deal to most, but she's only ever spent two nights in before, and those with her mum. This is the first time in her whole life that Mary has been out of her eye line and yet she didn't bat an eyelid. She was a dream to muck out around, absolutely chilled out, and just couldn't have been more well-behaved.Returning her to the field, I didn't expect any extreme silliness, but thought a bit of jogging or excitement when she saw mum might have been in order. This foal led more beautifully than the majority of adult horses that you see and was just an absolute credit to all of the hours and effort we've (more than willingly) poured into her. Caught her again 10 minutes later to take her rug off and she came running up in an instant, head straight back into her halter, and stood like a saint to be stripped. To watch your beautifully mannered baby behave so impeccably, and to know that no one is responsible for that but you, is something that just never loses its novelty. Call it luck or fate or whatever else you like, but not a day passes where I'm not grateful for my perfect little surprise, nor all of the lovely people who've been on hand with help and advice from day one, lots of HHOers among them :)
