ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary party of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the National Assembly has posed unflinching confidence in the leadership of party?s Quaid Nawaz Sharif and expressed hope that the PML-N would sweep the upcoming general elections as a result of masses? support for its leader.
The meeting held here Friday at the Parliament House chaired by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi discussed political situation in the country and evolved strategy for the Senate polls being held today (Saturday).
Well-placed sources told The News here Friday that Prime Minister Abbasi asserted that none could influence the members of the House for changing their loyalties. Some members pointed out earlier that they have been receiving telephone calls from non-CLI/private numbers, asking for not casting vote by staying absent or vote for candidates other than the PML-N. Prime Minister Abbasi made it emphatically clear that such interference wouldn?t be tolerated and if any such call is made, he would take action since he has been assured that no interference would come across from anywhere unrelated. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmad told The News Friday evening that members of the National Assembly belonging to the PML-N would turn up for taking part in the polls in record number and the members holding the banner of Nawaz Sharif will succeed. He was hopeful that the PML-N would emerge as the largest parliamentary group in Senate in the wake of today?s polls. To a query, Sheikh Aftab said some members of the National Assembly who have been deprived of their constituencies due to reduction in number of seats for Punjab are frustrated. He said such members are switching their political alignment since they aren?t hopeful to find a constituency where they will be able to secure the PML-N ticket. He said any other political party could accommodate such people and this hope has compelled them to switch sides.
Our correspondent adds: Prime Minister Abbasi said that the law of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) requires serious reforms as it was promulgated by a dictator to counter the politicians and fulfil his designs.
In an interview with a private television channel, the prime minister said though there should be a process for accountability, but it must be within the purview of the law and the Constitution. He further said executive is almost paralysed today as the officers are not willing to work. He said the easiest way for a government functionary is to do no work, or else they would have to face either a court or NAB.
He again called for dialogue among the institutions to create an understanding on each other's functions. Talking about the arrest of former director general of Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Ahad Cheema, he said that before arresting him, NAB should have framed charges and held prior investigation. He hoped that laws would be amended to hold the Senate elections through proportional representation in the National Assembly to avoid horse-trading.
To a question about the Financial Action Task Force's decision on Pakistan, he said it does not happen by committing any crime, rather it is an administrative issue. He said the government would manage the situation through the measures required by the UN.Earlier, the JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman called on Prime Minister Abbasi. They exchanged views on overall political situation.
