I haven't posted for a while, but hopeful that some of the H&H users may be able to give some clarity to my situation. I think i know what I have to do, but dread the livery yard feedback on potentially pts of an 8yr old horse. My personal circumstances are changing, to include a relocation, stress on finances due to terminally parent and an impending house purchase. I have to make serious considerations as what may be best for my horse. This is not so simple as a straightforward sale given the horse's long term health issues, which have prevented or significantly reduced any ridden work in the two years. These include significant bouts of laminitis (preventative regumate given daily all year round, in conjunction with very careful management and an EMS friendly diet), bridle lameness, severe allergies to some commonly used equine products, feedstuffs and drugs, a historic toxic episode with ongoing issues around lymphangitis and fluid retention around the head and only one patent jugular vein so intense fast work is out of the question. I bought the horse to hunt and event, but she is and has been for some time basically a field ornament- wants for nothing, is happy and well cared for. Her insurance premiums are ridiculously high, and so any new home would require a slush fund for emergencies, as well as the additional costs of diet, management and existing regumate. I do not perceive sale as an option due to the catalogue of issues above, am reluctant to give her free to good home due to the horror stories I've heard. The biggest fear is I relinquish any ability to ensure her care and wellbeing is a priority; or intervene if this is not the case. Loan is also fraught with problems in my own experience and I am wary. Retirement livery may be an option but finding one happy with administering drugs and the set-up for intense management of a laminitic in my area is proving difficult. The only one I found offering rehab and retirement livery further afield seemed very expensive, which may not be long term feasible. Bloodbank not an option due to non-patent vein due to catherisation, nor administration of regumate daily. Are an HHO-ers aware of any other avenues I could explore- I am happy to do right by the horse for the long term, although i can't see a viable way other than the inevitable. Many thanks for any input, but please keep it pleasant; this is a very emotive subject and I've put this off for as long as possible. Xx
