Some of you may have seen my muck heap thread recently and this is a follow on to that. If not long story short, I didn't know the laws regarding muck disposal, we carried on putting muck in the ditch along side the field as that is what the previous owner did. Had complaints so farmer said we need a muck heap.I went to the farmers house at the weekend and apologized for the misunderstanding, said that I can put a muck heap in my field but will have to put hardcore underneath it, otherwise it will sink into the mud. I have told the lady I share with and she said if the farmer is renting out land as grazing only it should be his responsibility to pay for the hardcore and arrange this to be done. We would also need to hardcore the gate so when it comes to emptying the muck heap the tractor will not ruin gateways etc. Again who is responsible for covering this cost of the hardcore? I have read it needs to be 10 meters from the ditch, we have a ditch each side so would have to put it somewhere in the middle. Again this will cause issues when clearing it, unless farmer is willing to put another gate in the middle. I assumed it would be us covering the cost of both the hardcore and building a muck heap (goes without saying muck heap disposal is our responsibility)We can't do anything about it yet, the field is far too wet and trashed. On a temp basis we are allowed to use a small section outside the field as long as we keep it tidy. We advertised for local allotments and have had no interest (there are a lot of stables in my area that already supply the allotments)
