When the smell of death prevailed after the Mina fire of 1997, during which more than 50,000 tents were burned down, 300 pilgrims killed and at least 2,000 others injured, arrangements were made to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. Among others, these arrangements included the use of fire-resistant tents in place of the traditional ones, a ban on cooking gas cylinders inside tents and forcing all domestic pilgrims to join domestic Haj groups. These arrangements made Haj an organized and safe event.
