RIO DE JANEIRO: The last of 18 hostages seized in a prison riot near Rio de Janeiro have been freed and guards have retaken control of the facility, officials said.
The uprising in the overcrowded prison began on Sunday and was quelled after a few hours, the state penitentiary administration said in a statement late on Sunday. Eight guards and 10 inmates had been held hostage. Three prisoners were injured during the incident, the statement said.
According to authorities, the riot began "when security inspectors and administrators from the penitentiary prevented an escape attempt by inmates." Most Brazilian prisons are seriously overcrowded and plagued by gang violence. In one of the bloodiest episodes, 56 people were killed in an uprising at a prison in the Amazon city of Manaus early last year.
The Rio prison unrest came two days after President Michel Temer signed a decree putting the army in charge of security across the state, where crime is spinning out of control and one policeman is killed on average every three days.Brazil´s lower house of Congress was expected to vote on the decree late on Monday, with the Senate due to consider the measure afterwards.
