Facebook is so desperate for engagement, it's spamming users via their 2FA numbers

The social media behemoth has seen a decline in traffic (https://mashable.com/2018/01/31/facebook-earnings-2017-50-million-hours-per-day-traffic/) in recent weeks along with millions of users leaving its platform (https://www.recode.net/2018/2/12/16998750/facebooks-teen-users-decline-instagram-snap-emarketer), and it appears to be taking rather drastic measures to win them back. Specifically, spamming the hell out of them in a most unfortunate place.*

So says one account holder, Gabriel Lewis, who tweeted that Facebook texted "spam" to the phone number he submitted for the purposes of 2-factor authentication (https://mashable.com/2016/09/22/two-factor-authentication-hackers/). And no, he insists he did not (https://twitter.com/Gabriel__Lewis/status/963795048247644160) have mobile notifications turned on.*
