On Feb. 11, Canadian figure skating duo Eric Radford and Meagan Duhamel delivered a powerhouse performance (http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/meagan-duhamel-and-eric-radford-top-team-event-pairs-field) to Adele's "Hometown Glory" at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea (https://www.popsugar.com/fitness/Winter-Olympics-2018-Details-44259749). The phenomenal skater helped team Canada earn the gold medal (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/11/sports/olympics/team-figure-skating.html), which marked an incredible victory for the nation. But there's another significant benchmark to recognize: Radford has become the first openly gay athlete to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics.
Radford publicly came out of the closet (https://www.outsports.com/2014/12/4/7321931/eric-radford-gay-figure-skater) in 2014, shortly after the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. In 2015, Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy also came out (https://www.popsugar.com/fitness/Gus-Kenworthy-Comes-Out-Gay-ESPN-Interview-38854131). This time around, there are 14 out-and-proud LGBTQ+ athletes competing (https://www.hrc.org/blog/meet-the-openly-lgbtq-athletes-competing-at-the-winter-olympics), which is a historic benchmark in and of itself. But Radford's gold medal win (and US figure skater Adam Rippon's bronze medal win) are even more momentous. Not only are these LGBTQ+ Olympians beacons of representation, but they are excelling. (They're also throwing shade at conservative people (https://www.popsugar.com/news/Gus-Kenworthy-Adam-Rippon-Olympics-2018-44571074) like Mike Pence, but that's an entirely different story.)
So proud that @Adaripp (https://twitter.com/Adaripp?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) and I get to wear these medals and show the world what we can do! #represent (https://twitter.com/hashtag/represent?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)ً?ڈ³ï¸ڈ*ً??? #olympics (https://twitter.com/hashtag/olympics?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) #pyeongchang2018 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/pyeongchang2018?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) #pride (https://twitter.com/hashtag/pride?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) #outandproud (https://twitter.com/hashtag/outandproud?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) #medalists (https://twitter.com/hashtag/medalists?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) #TeamNorthAmerica (https://twitter.com/hashtag/TeamNorthAmerica?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) pic.twitter.com/eXMlZ2Utrw (https://t.co/eXMlZ2Utrw)

In the wake of the victory, Radford was simply over the moon with pride on his official Twitter account. In addition to an LGBTQ+-pride-focused snap that included Rippon, Radford said he might "explode with pride" (https://twitter.com/Rad85E/status/962924058978340866) and shared an additional victory snap (https://twitter.com/Rad85E/status/962924058978340866). With plenty more figure skating events (https://www.olympic.org/pyeongchang-2018/results/en/general/competition-schedule.htm) on tap for the next couple of weeks (not to mention the other sports with LGBTQ+ athletes), we're crossing our fingers that this is just the start of a groundbreaking year in Olympic history.
