DIY planks

Hiya So whilst looking up about making my own jumps I have yet to find specifics as to what I should be looking for in a bit of timber. So my questions are: 1) what type of wood would you look for? 2) what treatment does this wood need? 3) what dimensions would you be looking for?Thanks in advance I'm really not the most handy person but I figure this could be something even I could manage!
