LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday described the provincial government?s self-employment scheme as a revolutionary programme which, he said, was proving helpful in bridging the gap between the rich and the poor as well as addressing the issues of poverty and unemployment.
He was addressing a ceremony held at Badshahi Masjid in connection with distributing over Rs 600 million among 25,000 families under the Chief Minister?s Self-Employment Scheme. Shahbaz said mothers, sons and elderly persons were attending the ceremony and ?I salute them on behalf of the Punjab government for deciding to lead a respectful life through honesty, and hard work instead of seeking alms from others?.
He said the self-employment scheme idea came to his mind when he met Dr Amjad Saqib during his exile in 2005. ?I had prayed that the PML-N will work on this unique and innovative idea if it came into to power so that millions of people can be self-employed.?
The chief minister said an amount of Rs 40 billion had so far been distributed as interest-free loan to 1.8 million families under the programme, which benefitted around to benefit 22.5 million people.
?On the one hand, there are great Pakistanis who have repaid the loans while on the other hand there are very rich persons who have got loans worth billions of rupees written off despite having Mercedes cars, factories and lucrative posts,? said the chief minister, pointing 99.9 per cent return rate for the scheme which provides loan up to Rs 50,000.
He said for eliminating unemployment and poverty, economy should be moved at the faster pace by promoting agriculture and industrial sectors.
Shahbaz said Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Iqbal had not dreamt of a Pakistan where the rich could deprive the poor of their hard-earned income.
He said if given an opportunity, the programme would be extended to all federating units, adding that the Pakistanis would decide in the 2018 elections whether to continue with the culture of allegations, lies and abuses or to bury the same.During the event, three persons, who took loans under the scheme and started a business, shared their experiences and observations.
