Feeding turmeric for hock arthritis

Hi All,I've just started feeding my horse equine america turmeric as a feed supplement, he has hock arthritis sdn is also given Equine Answers premier flex HA.Do i need to be adding freshly ground pepper to this? If so why? Thank you
