Newbie to showing, any advice? Please :-)

Anybody on here that knows the ins and outs of showing mini shetlands?Do they need to be registered with anybody? Even for local shows?Are they shown in bridles or headcollars?Hoping to just have some fun but any tips or info much appreciated :-)
