Loosing a horse , help needed

I had to salt have my boy of 20 years put to sleep the other day , devastating for everyone , my other horse has been with him for years and now close to him we showed him the body afterwards on advice from the vet , he has been up and down last few days , off feed a little and some days not as bright as other as , settled out grazing in the field , as to be expected but just never had to deal with this before as always been 2 when my third horse was put to sleep , he is only just getting over gastric ulcers and ititbale bowel and would hate for him to start flaring up again , Any advice ??
