KARACHI: Rifts in Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan over award of Senate tickets have deepened further late Monday, as the Rabita Committee suspended Kamran Tessori in a press conference, which was termed ?unconstitutional? by party chief Farooq Sattar.
Earlier in the day, a party meeting failed to reach consensus over the candidates for Senate. Both Farooq Sattar and senior leader Amir Khan disagreed with each other over the candidates. Following the disagreement, Sattar and his supporters walked out of the Bahadurabad venue for his residence in the PIB Colony amid chants in favour of the party chief.
Later members of the Rabita Committee decided to suspend Kamran Tessori and revoked his party membership for six months. ?Kamran Tessori bhai is not a member of the Rabita Committee anymore but Farooq Sattar bhai remains our convener,? Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui announced, adding essori ?has also been suspended from the party for six months?.
He said the Rabita Committee had recommended six names for the Senate elections ? Nasreen Jalil, Farogh Nasim, Aminul Haque, Shabbir Qaimkhani, Amir Khan ? but Sattar insisted on ?sacrificing two other leaders? to ensure Tessori?s seat in the Upper House of Parliament. The Rabita Committee has accepted several of the party convener?s wishes, Siddiqui said, but added the party workers would not let them go ahead with Tessori?s nomination for the Senate seat. Siddiqui was flanked by Waseem Akhtar, Faisal Sazbwari, Amir Khan, and other senior leaders at the press conference.
A gold trader by profession, Tessori is a former member of the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional and joined the MQM-P last year and quickly rose to prominence. He contested the PS-114 by-election for MQM-P against the Pakistan Peoples Party?s Saeed Ghani but lost by a big margin.
Meanwhile, four out of eight MQM-P senators ? including Colonel (retd) Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi, Dr Mohammad Farogh Naseem, Maulana Tanveer-ul-Haq Thanvi, and Nasreen Jalil ? will retire next month. The MQM-P will contest for 12 Senate seats from Sindh ? where it is the second-largest party ? enjoying the support of 50 members of the provincial assembly (MPAs) in the 168-member body. The PPP has 94 lawmakers in the provincial assembly.Addressing a late night press conference at the PIB offices of the party, Farooq Sattar said he has the support of several Rabta Committee members including Shahid Pasha, Qamar Mansoor, Abdul Waseem and Muhammad Hassan as well as Khuwaja Izhar Hassan and Kamran Tissori. Sattar has also called a meeting of the MQM-P general workers meeting today at the KMC ground
He said the Bahadurabad press conference is violation of party?s rules and regulations and the decisions made there are not constitutional. He said he had barred Bahadurabad leaders from holding a press conference. He said these people wanted a weak leader. Farooq said leadership is unacceptable to him without powers. He said in the past 15 months he took every decision with consensus.
He said the Bahadurabad leadership still recognises him as their convener but held a press conference without his approval. He said the Rabtta committee may elect its new leader if it wants to do so.He said the new comers should be embraced but those involved in crimes have no place in the party.
