LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Friday confirmed that the main suspect in Zainab murder and rape case had no commercial bank accounts.
A letter addressed to the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) constituted to investigate the rape and murder of Zainab said, ?All commercial banks have informed that they have searched their databases and found no account of the accused against the said CNIC.?
The central bank had launched an inquiry after Dr. Shahid Masood alleged that Imran Ali, the main accused, had dozens of bank accounts.
Meanwhile, announcing the findings of the State Bank during a news conference in Lahore, Punjab government spokesman Malik Ahmed Khan said the allegations against the main accused levelled by a television anchor were "fake and fabricated".
"The news report presented by Dr. Shahid Masood is absolutely fake and fabricated,? Malik Ahmed Khan said, adding that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) had also confirmed that there were no foreign currency commercial bank accounts of the accused.
Responding to a question about the lawmakers named in relation to the child abuse issue in Kasur, Khan said those who faced ?character-assassination" had the right to clear their name.
Meanwhile, talking to the media after inaugurating 78 new Mobile Registration Vans (MRV) of the National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) in Islamabad, Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal said the Punjab police had done a great job by tracing the main accused in Zainab rape and murder case. He said it was a huge success but for some elements it was hard to digest and they launched a propaganda by involving influential personalities in the case.
He said the social media propaganda and the claims of TV anchor Dr. Shahid Masood that the main accused had 37 bank accounts had proven totally wrong. Meanwhile, the inquiry committee investigating Naqeebullah Mehsud murder case submitted an initial report to the Supreme Court on Friday stating that he was killed in a fake encounter.
In its 15-page report, the committee declared Naqeebullah innocent and rejected suspended SSP Malir Rao Anwar?s claims in the light of evidences. The report said Naqeebullah and two other men, identified as Qasim and Hazrat Ali, were picked up by police on January 3.
The other two men were set free after three days on January 6 after getting bribes. The men have now become eye-witnesses in the case and documented their statements before the inquiry committee. The report said as many as 26 bullet casings of sub-machine guns were recovered from the site and no evidence was found of firing from the victims. It said raids were being conducted to arrest the police officers involved in the incident but no major breakthrough could be achieved so far, as the suspended cops had switched off their cellphones.
