LAHORE: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said educational activities should continue in a peaceful environment and legal action should be initiated against the elements responsible for Punjab University students? clash.
He said this while chairing a meeting of Cabinet Committee on Law and Order Wednesday in which overall situation of law and order in Punjab as well as the incident that occurred in Punjab University was reviewed in detail.
Provincial higher education minister and acting vice chancellor of the Punjab University briefed the meeting about the incident.
Addressing the meeting, the chief minister made it clear that nobody is allowed to ruin the educational environment of a prestigious institution of higher education, adding that rule of law will be ensured at every cost. He said indiscriminate action be initiated against the elements responsible for disturbing the educational process of the university and directed that effective measures should be adopted to curb occurrence of such incidents in future.
In this connection, transparent composite strategy should be devised. He said indiscriminate action is essential against the persons tarnishing the university image so that students could continue their education in a congenial environment.
It is the responsibility of the department concerned and university administration to implement the decisions made in the past. In future, work should be done proactively with regard to implementation on such decisions, he added.
Various proposals were reviewed to continue the educational process in the Punjab University in a peaceful manner. Provincial ministers Rana Sanaullah, Ayub Gadhi, Raza Ali Gilani, Jehangir Khanzada, adviser to Rana Maqbool Ahmad, ACS (Home), IG Police and others attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, the chief minister appreciated the efforts of the team for arresting Zainab?s killer and said his arrest is the result of continued efforts of the team members. The members of the team that was assigned to trace the killer met with the chief minister.
The performance of all the departments as well as the Punjab Forensic Science Agency that helped in tracing the criminal is commendable and there is no doubt that it is a great job of the team, he added. The bereaved family is satisfied a little bit over this arrest. The whole nation was in a state of agony and pain over this incident and the arrest of the killer within two weeks has helped to get the nation rid of this pain. He said he is thankful to everybody as the example of such a concerted effort is very uncommon; adding that success is achieved when one is fully committed to achieving the goal.
Punjab Forensic Science Agency is a mega institution in the whole of South Asia and cases from foreign countries are referred to it, as well. He said the Punjab government had announced a cash prize of Rs10 million to identify the killer and now this amount will be divided among the members of the team that identified and arrested the criminal. The chief minister said the committee will soon present its recommendations in this regard.
On the other hand, the chief minister said the hard work of the sugarcane farmers will not be allowed to go down the drain and sugar mills will have to give rights of farmers. The chief minister was chairing a meeting Wednesday in which matters pertaining to payments to the sugarcane farmers by the sugar mills were discussed.The CM said the owner of the mill that will procure sugarcane at low rate will be arrested and no leniency will be shown to anybody. Action will also be initiated against the mill belonging to my relative, if it is found buying sugarcane at low rate. The chief minister also expressed sense of grief over the death of four members of a family in a road accident near Batapur. He has extended sympathies to the bereaved family and sought report.
