Buying a young horse?

All I ever hear is don't buy a young horse, or, younger horses are a pain and unpredictable but I'm in the process of selling my nightmare connemara Fern, and looking for a new horse. I have found a lovely 15h Bay Connemara (kinda obsessed with the breed) and he is 5. On his advert he is advertised as very chilled and laid back, a little lazy if anything, super out hacking and on roads. He's perfect for me. My only concern is that I want him to compete on a do some ode's on but I don't know if at the age of 5 I would be bringing him on? I don't think I'm experienced to bring on a horse, just a teenager. I viewed him yesterday and he's all that they said he was and more. Is it too soon to buy such a young horse or should I not pay attention to his age as he has had all the appropriate training and is ready to go. Help!
