ISLAMABAD: After retirement of Federal Secretary Finance Shahid Mehmood, the government has decided to rehire him as Adviser to Finance Ministry in order to ensure continuity of economic policies till completion of tenure of the incumbent regime, it is learnt.
The government has decided to appoint Arif Ahmed Khan as Federal Secretary Finance who is currently serving as Secretary Economic Affairs Division. However, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has not yet granted its final approval to this effect. The premier is expected to approve final decision to this effect anytime next week.
Official sources told The News on Saturday that two summaries were sent to the PM regarding appointment of Shahid Mehmood as Adviser to Finance Ministry as stop gap arrangement for ensuring continuity of economic policies and second summary was his appointment as Executive Director to Asian Development Bank (ADB). Shahid Mehmood, who reached the age of superannuation on January 6, 2018 had retired on January 5, 2018 because it was his last official working day. Although, the government considered granting him extension but it was dropped because of possible fallout from the judiciary, so finally he was considered as Adviser to Finance Ministry for next few months and then he would be moved to ADB as Pakistan?s Executive Director in multilateral financial institutions based in Manila.
Shahid Mehmood has worked as alternate ED into IMF on behalf of Pakistan before coming back to Islamabad when he was appointed as Special Secretary to Finance Ministry. After retirement of Dr Waqar Masood, he was appointed as full-fledged Secretary Finance last year.
Now Pakistan has been currently passing through post programme monitoring (PPM) of the IMF arrangement and Pakistan will have to talk on tight rope in next few months as financial indiscipline on fiscal side or failing to tackle external account could pose threat to entry into trap of IMF again which could become disastrous in the aftermath of US President Donald Trump?s latest tweet against Pakistan.
For appointment of secretary finance, different names were under consideration but Arif Ahmed Khan is the strongest contender in this race.
?Arif Ahmed Khan enjoys backing of Adviser to PM on Finance Miftah Ismail but the final approval in this regard will be given by PM Abbasi next week,? said official sources.
When contacted, Miftah Ismail confirmed that two summaries were sent to the PM regarding appointment of Shahid Mehmood as Adviser to Finance Ministry and his appointment as ED to ADB after relinquishing charge by the incumbent ED on behalf of Pakistan.?Different names are under consideration for filling slot of secretary finance and the premier will take decision to this effect probably next week,? he added.
