I keep my horses on a private yard and from my yard I can see a neighbouring group of horses. They live out and look well conditioned with food and water (well grass and hay) The problem is one of the horses is lame. Quite seriously so, he struggles to walk, moves all 4 legs one at a time and isn't happy. The owner is meant to be fairly knowledgeable and I believe is an instructor. The owners do not believe in rugs/shoes or vets. The rugs/shoes thing is fine. It's horses for courses. She is treating the horse homeopathically (is that a word) but the horse is still lame. It can barely walk. Several people have tried speaking to the owner saying the horse needs a vet but the owner has replied "the horse has arthritis and I am waiting for the hock to fuse" but they later admitted the horse has had no x rays and not seen a vet so they don't actually know for sure. If people on my yard did ring whw or rspca is there anything they can do as the horse has food, water and is having some sort of treatment?? We all believe that the horse is suffering and it looks miserable and I think there is a welfare issue. We've tried being nice and talking to the owners and offering help but to no avail. It's not the kind of stiffness you'd expect to see on a horse that is just a bit stiff.
