ISLAMABAD: Political leaders on Tuesday called for summoning a joint session of both the houses of parliament to devise a uniform strategy and revisit Pakistan?s policy towards Washington against the recent anti-Pakistan tweet of US President Donald Trump.
Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah said the language, which Donald Trump used against Pakistan, was unfortunate. Talking to media persons here at his chamber at the Parliament House, the opposition leader said it was not a matter of one political party or any individual, but of Pakistan and there should be no politics on it. ?Political parties may have different ideologies on the issue, but they are united on one point on the interests of Pakistan and all should sit together to formulate the joint narrative,? he added.
Khursheed Shah said Pakistan had paid a heavy price in the war against terrorism. He said Pakistan has not been able to come out of the effects of the Afghan war imposed on it during the military regime of General Ziaul Haq. ?The US president, while pointing out $30 billion coalition funds, degraded himself,? Khursheed said.
However, he said the government was responsible for what the US president was saying today because if the government had appointed its foreign minister from the very first day, then there would be an independent foreign policy that would have been debated in parliament. To a question, the opposition leader said if there was any surgical strike, then Pakistan should give a befitting response.
Khursheed challenged the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan to bring anything against him either in or outside parliament. ?I have spent 50 years of my life in politics and always done clean politics and being an opposition leader I challenge that if there is anything against me, it should be brought to parliament and if you (Imran Khan) hate parliament then bring it outside parliament,? he said.
Coming hard on Imran Khan for his allegations against him, the opposition leader said Imran did not know anything except telling lies. ?I have repeatedly asked Mr U-turn to bring proof of his allegations but he did not bring anything,? he said.
Khursheed Shah said Imran himself was caught in four cases. He said Imran Khan was doing things what the astrologers were asking him to do. ?Imran Khan is mentally disturbed and I cannot make any comment on him,? he said. To a question about any NRO in Saudi Arabia, he said if there was any new NRO, then the courts should be locked. ?Are the courts only for the poor,? he questioned.
To another question, the opposition leader said Asif Ali Zardari compared Dr Tahirul Qadri with late Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan only because he gathered all the opposition parties under one roof. Meanwhile, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said Pakistan will not allow the United States to scapegoat Pakistan for its own failure.
In a tweet, Bilawal said, ?We will eradicate extremism because it?s in our interest, not because of what Donald Trump says.? In another tweet, he said, ?The US wants to win in Afghanistan/Iraq/Syria and the many quagmires they are involved with, no plan to get out and all they are left with is excuses, blame games and denial.?
The PPP chairman said someone should explain to Donald Trump the difference between coalition support fund reimbursement for work done and US aid ostensibly given for humanitarian reasons to win hearts and minds. ?Cutting off moneys owed for assistance already rendered does not encourage further cooperation,? he commented.
He further stated that only the PPP has experience in handling both the US and own domestic terrorism issues. ?In our last government we launched Pakistan?s first, most extensive and most successful anti-terror operations,? Bilawal continued. ?We also shut Nato supplies and air bases until the US apologised for Salala,? he said.
The PPP Senator Sherry Rehman tweeted, ?Coalition support fund has NEVER been counted as AID in any accounting by Pakistan, nor will it be seen as part of assistance. It was compensation on expenses incurred re joint action on border. Other ?Aid? we should indeed talk about, because Pk never charged for Nato traffic.?
Imran Khan said in his reaction that Trump lacked wisdom and had no knowledge about the background of the Afghan war and it resulted in devastation in Pakistan. The PTI chief said Trump was speaking against Pakistan on the behest of Islamabad?s enemies. He reminded Trump that at one time, there were 150,000 Nato troops in Afghanistan in addition to Afghanistan?s own 200,000 plus forces and he was trying to say that Pakistan did not help enough due to which they failed to win the war in Afghanistan.
?None is ready to accept what he is saying, who knows the facts. The US war caused over $100 billion losses to Pakistan in addition to loss of so many lives in a war, which Pakistan had nothing to do with,? he noted.
The PTI chief contended that the rulers decided that Pakistan should be part of this war and recalled how he had been opposing this, even on the floor of the National Assembly while he was dubbed as Taliban Khan.
?Against these dollars, Trump was referring to, they brought destruction in Pakistan, tribal areas were devastated and after all these sacrifices, Pakistan was being disgraced and insulted,? he said.
Imran said Pakistan should learn from this war and never in future be part of any such conflict no matter how much dollars were offered. Meanwhile, commenting on Trump?s recent accusations, the PkMAP chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai called for strengthening relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan in the face of the rising US threat.?We need unity in such circumstances,? Achakzai said, adding that issues with Afghanistan need to be addressed to pave the way for confidence building measures between the two neighbours.
