LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah has said there is only one judge for 62,000 people in Punjab and courts are functioning in worst possible conditions at some places.
In an interview with BBC, he said the Bench and the Bar could provide speedy justice, but it was not happening. The number of cases is increasing, but of the judges, he remarked and said 1,100,000 cases were pending with district courts and another 147,000 with the LHC.
The LHC chief justice said there was no pressure on the LHC despite some very important decisions and he had not received any phone call so far. According to Chief Justice Mansoor, a case is disposed of if the lawyer doesn?t seek adjournment, police present witnesses and everyone attends the hearing. If the system introduced through model courts is extended across the province, all the pending cases/ backlog would be cleared within a year. The chief justice said progress was being made as far as the Bench was concerned ? including providing training to the judges, introduction of information technology and separate courts for women and children ? ?but, unfortunately, the other part [Bar] is not with us.?
