Will try and keep this brief and with as much detail as possible. I keep my two sports horses at home on three acres, they are out 24/7 and currently barefoot and not being ridden (I cant be bothered riding in winter) They have access to the yard and stables, I do not and will not stable them. The ground is WET and now, thanks to the recent snow and rain its becoming saturated and muddy. Same as last year, we coped, fed up by the end of it but it was no real biggy and everything recovered! Land is split into three paddocks and I have closed off the top two (no grass and very wet so whats the point in them trashing all three fields!)I work for a large business park fifteen minutes from home which is surrounded (650 acres) by a high chain link fence, one way in/out, security 24/7. A stones throw from my office and the security office outside of the perimeter fencing is a paddock with a large double garage sized brick built out building (its broken but not going anywhere!) our perimeter fence is most of the fencing of the two ish acre paddock, then big hedges and some post and barbed wire fencing makes up the rest so very secure. Happy with the fencing, happy with the grazing quality and happy with the natural shelter and outbuilding would be left open for them with hay inside. Its located at the bottom of a track accessed via a cul-de-sac on the edge of a village and the only real house it backs on to is a big million pound + property (he used to rent the field but is moving so we have it back) so very quiet and no through road. The access gate is basic but easily doable with hardstanding to get them in and out but I would use the outbuilding for anything that needs doing (removing rugs, feeding, grooming ect)So my plan is to move them to this field for Jan and Feb to save my land, save on my hay bills (they are too fat for much hardfeed so only on a balancer and handful of muesli and chaff anyway) and it means I can get to see them morning and late afternoon in the daylight (yard has lights at home but nevertheless I still see them in the dark both ends of the day because of work) my work is flexible in that meaning I can pop to see them anytime I like but would require effort at the weekends to drive over to see them twice a day (once if i take Valium otherwise its minimum twice a day for me and my babies, lol!)So some pro's and con's ... what are your thoughts please? Would you do it? Am I missing something glaringly obvious?I'm gona go and walk the field shortly and then speak to the farmer who we have earmarked the paddock for (sheep at some point) I just really dont know if I want to 'risk' it but then I think I'm being way too precious since having them at home! Thanks if you got this far :)
