LAHORE: In an unprecedented move, a farmer has allegedly set his sugarcane field on fire due to ?not getting due price of his produce from powerful mill owners?.
A resident of Kasur district, Jafar was stated to be annoyed over low price of sugarcane and hostile attitude of sugar mills owners. He was of the view that sugar mills owners had already delayed crushing season and now farmers? produce was not being bought at reasonable price. He claimed that other farmers of the area were also not happy over these developments.
Meanwhile, following this disturbing development, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif chaired a meeting Sunday to review the payments to farmers by sugar mills owners. Addressing the meeting, the chief minister directed ensuring the availability of sugarcane at a cost of Rs180 per bag and further added that if there is a complaint of the decrease in weight then he will take strict action against the responsible persons.
He also directed for ensuring digital monitoring of the entire process of payments and taking strict action against mills owners who do not pay full amount or deduct sugarcane crop. He said action will not be taken against the employee but against the owner. If someone strives to snatch the rights of the farmers then I will be standing with the farmers, he added. The chief minister directed the provincial ministers and other secretaries to visit their assigned districts regularly instead of sitting in the offices and stay in the field to protect the interests of farmers. Kisan Ittehad Group President Khalid Khokhar said the farmers are grateful to the chief minister for the way he is working to protect their interests. Sugar Mills Association President Javed Kayani said they will ensure the implementation of decision regarding payments to sugarcane farmers.
