KARACHI: A local court granted bail to Shahrukh Jatoi, Siraj Talpur in the famous Shahzeb murder case and was later set free from Jinnah Hospital where he was lodged for the last two months.

District and Sessions Judge (South) Imdad Hussain Khoso granted bail to the accused in the sum of Rs500,000 (each) after examining the pardon agreement between the heirs of the deceased and the accused. The 22-year-old Shahzeb was killed on December 25, 2012 at the DHA following an altercation with the convicts. The ATC later awarded death penalty to Shahrukh Jatoi and Nawab Siraj Talpur in June 2013.

The shocking murder at the hands of a scion of an influential family had sent shock waves across the country and stirred the civil society and human rights campaigners.

Meanwhile, the father of the deceased, who submitted an affidavit in the court, told the court that the two families had reached a pardon agreement. He said his family had pardoned the killers and they have no objection if the accused were granted bail. According to the pardon agreement, Shahzeb Khan's family were paid Rs 270 million, besides a 500-square yard house in DHA and an apartment in Australia.

Earlier, the subordinate court was directed by the Sindh High Court to retry the killers of Shahzeb. The SHC scrapped the death sentence and the life imprisonment awarded by an Anti-Terrorism Court in 2013.

The attorneys for the defendants argued that they had not committed any terrorist activity in Shahzeb's murder. They also took the plea that since the defendants and the heirs of the deceased Shahzeb have reached a pardon agreement, therefore the trial of the convicts was not justified. The attorneys prayed to the court to grant bail to Shahrukh Jatoi, Siraj Talpur and others. Shahrukh Jatoi was also granted bail in an illegal weapon possession case registered against him on a surety bond of Rs0.1 million.

The court ordered the defendants to submit surety bonds of Rs 0.5 million each, following which the court issued the release orders. The release orders were dispatched to the Jinnah Hospital, where Jatoi was lodged for the last two months, from where he was set free.
