California lawmakers have rejected a bill that would mandate “kill switches (http://mashable.com/2014/02/07/california-smartphone-kill-switches/?utm_campaign=Mash-Prod-RSS-Feedburner-All-Partial&utm_cid=Mash-Prod-RSS-Feedburner-All-Partial&utm_medium=feed&utm_source=rss)” on smartphones sold in the state.

Under the proposal, all smartphones in California were to be sold with software that could render a phone unusable in the event of theft. However, California’s state senate shot down the bill (http://www.cnet.com/news/calif-state-senate-shoots-down-kill-switch-legislation/) with a 19-17 vote. It required 21 votes to pass.

Those who backed the bill wanted the new legislature to protect the users from rapidly rising smartphone theft (http://www.zdnet.com/smartphone-theft-reaches-pandemic-proportions-and-you-are-a-target-7000026397/); the rejection, they claim, favors big industry.
