LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered immediate release of Tehreek Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah leaders and workers detained during the last few days.
According to the Punjab government spokesman on Tuesday, the chief minister issued this order as a goodwill gesture, saying that the Tehreek sit-in ended due to his policy of not clashing with state institutions.
Meanwhile, talking to a Pakistan Kissan Ittehad delegation, the CM said the problems of farmers were solved on a priority basis in the past and their issues would be dealt with on a priority basis in the future as well. He said sugar mills would be bound to purchase sugarcane from farmers at Rs 180/40kg and legal action would be initiated against sugar mills not following the government decision. He said the interests of farmers were dear to him and nobody would be allowed to play with their interests. He said the PML-N was a party of farmers. The government gave relief to farmers through the historic Kissan Package worth billions of rupees.
He directed that the industry secretary and the cane commissioner should hold a meeting with Sugar Mills Association office-bearers for starting the crushing season at the earliest. He warned that legal action would be initiated against the mills failing to start the crushing season in time. He said the reimbursement of farmers? expenditures by millers would also be ensured. He said he even got FIRs registered against his relatives for failing to pay farmers timely.
He directed making proper arrangements for holding the Kissan Mela. He said a meeting between farmers and Federal Minister Awais Leghari would be arranged to solve the issue of electricity arrears.
Chairing another meeting to review progress on the Khadim-e-Punjab Saaf Pani Programme, he said the programme for providing potable water was a mega initiative of public interest. Therefore, there was a dire need to move this programme forward in a professional manner. He said the programme had been disrupted by some elements, but the delay should be rectified by working speedily. He said success was achieved if one was sincere in providing best services to people. ?You should move forward as a team and
make this programme a success,? he added.
He said the Punjab government had devised a system of internal audit of every project and a third-party audit mechanism had also been introduced for an effective monitoring of various projects.
The chief secretary, Saaf Pani Company South Chairman Arif Saeed, the P&D chairman, the housing secretary and other officials attended the meeting.
