ISLAMABAD: Former interior minister and Senate Committee on Interior Chairman Senator A Rehman Malik has expressed deep concern about the Faizabad sit-in when the sit-in had not taken the present shape.
As chairman of the committee, he had summoned the Interior Ministry and Islamabad administration during a session on November 17 and advised them to defuse the impasse amicably without losing any time before it spreads across the country.
Rehman Malik made several proposals to handle the situation. He said that failure of the operation to break up sit-in at Faizabad Interchange had shocked the whole nation and it was deeply worried about the safety of the country. "Nation's worry is genuine as Pakistan is already a prime target of terrorists, India and other international anti-Pak forces.?
He said that in the first place, a joint session of parliament should have been called immediately to discuss the brewing storm. Parliament should have been taken into confidence and a high-powered committee/Jirga of parliamentarians from all parties could be formed to help the government in resolving the situation. That was unfortunately not done. However, there is still time. The government can even now place the issue before parliament with the proposal to constitute a more representative panel consisting of Islamic scholars from all sects, parliamentarians from all political parties and presidents of all bars to approach the protesters for a meaningful dialogue to convince the leadership of protesters to end the sit-in peacefully.
He added that the protesters had taken a very sensitive issue and unfortunately all the organs of the government did not seem to be on the same page on this issue. He asked as to why the report of Raja Zafarul Haq committee was not being made public, which could clear the ambiguity and help in settling this issue.
Senator Malik asked the government to improve its handling of the situation. "It is important to have a properly trained anti-riots force to act with minimum damage and to get maximum output," he suggested. He asked the government to take effective steps to implement the orders of the Supreme Court and to avoid unpleasant remarks in case of non-compliance of the orders.
He stressed that dialogue is the best option and violence would be counterproductive. He said that Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi should establish direct contact with the leaders of the Faizabad sit-in and take them into confidence and settle the issue with some assurances to resolve the matter. The government may follow the PPP model of dealing with such large protests and sit-ins in Islamabad.
In the current uncertain situation, Rahman Malik appealed to the leadership of sit-in/protesters to resolve this issue peacefully through dialogue in the larger national interest. He condemned the government?s decision of taking all news channels off air. "The decision has seriously dented the freedom of press and will certainly provide a space to the propagandists to spread false information," he said.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/com/cwEr/~4/IhOz4q9F2TI
