US television networks Fox News and NBC said US officials had told them they believed on Tuesday’s test was of an ICBM, marking a milestone in Pyongyang’s missile development.
The launch, on the eve of US Independence Day, took place days before leaders from the Group of 20 nations were due to discuss steps to rein in **rth Korea’s ******* programme, which it has pursued in defiance of UN Security Council sanctions.
**rth Korea’s state media said the launch was ordered and supervised by leader Kim Jong Un and sent the Hwasong-14 933-km reaching an altitude of 2,802 km (1,741 miles) over a flight time of 39 minutes.
**rth Korea has said it is working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the US mainland, something US President Donald Trump vowed in January would never happen.
Some analysts said the flight details on Tuesday suggested the new missile had a range of more than 8,000-km, which would put significant parts of the US mainland in range, representing major advances in its programme.
Others said they believed its range was **t so far. David Wright, co-director of the Global Security Programme at the US-based Union of Concerned Scientists, said the flight time and distance suggested the missile could reach a maximum range of about 6,700-km , bringing Alaska into range.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in said the missile was believed to be an intermediate-range type, but the military was looking into the possibility it was an ICBM.
The Pentagon and State Department said on Tuesday that they and other US government agencies were working on a more detailed assessment of the launch.
On Monday night, the Pentagon described the missile as an intermediate-range type that travelled for 37 minutes.
Meanwhile, Russia and China on Tuesday called for a simultaneous freeze on **rth Korean nuclear and missile tests and military exercises by the United States as tensions ratcheted up on the peninsula.
"The two sides propose that the DPRK (**rth Korea) as a voluntary political decision declares a moratorium on testing nuclear explosive devices and ballistic rocket launches, and the US and South Korea refrain from carrying out large-scale joint exercises," their foreign ministries said in a joint statement.
"Parallel to this the opposing sides should start negotiations and affirm general principles of their relations including the **n-use of force, rejection of aggression and peaceful coexistence," the statement said.
The joint statement issued after a meeting between leaders Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping in Moscow followed an an**uncement by **rth Korea that it had test fired its first intercontinental ballistic missile.
The claim could be a watershed moment in Pyongyang’s push to develop a nuclear ****** capable of hitting the mainland United States -- although Moscow and Washington cast doubt on the claim it was a long-range missile.
The test sparked a Twitter outburst from US President Donald Trump who urged **rth Korea’s closest ally China to act to "end this **nsense once and for all".
In their joint statement Russia and China condemned the missile test an**uncement as "unacceptable" and urged against "any statements or actions that could lead to an increase in tensions".
China has previously called for a "dual track" approach of "suspension for suspension" that would see **rth Korea and the US ease up on tensions, and **w Russia has added its weight to the plan.
