ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Tuesday distributed cash prizes among the Pakistan cricket team for winning the ICC Champions Trophy, while a bench of Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued **tices to the Prime Minister Secretariat seeking comments on a petition questioning the premier’s discretionary powers to award cash prizes.

The petition says the money given to the cricket team could be spent on provision of basic facilities to citizens or promotion of regional cricket. Justice Aamer Farooq of the IHC resumed hearing of the petition. The court directed a deputy attorney general (DAG) during the last hearing to assist it on provisions of law which empower the prime minister to sanction such rewards.

The DAG told the court that under the rules of business, the prime minister had discretionary powers to an**unce and sanction such money, as it was a matter of practice following any important happening in the country.

Exercising this power, the prime minister an**unces compensations in case of floods, disasters or any accident, he further told the court. The petitioner on the other hand adopted before the court that the Prime Minister Secretariat through a June 21 letter had an**unced a cash reward of Rs215 million where team players will get Rs10 million while the management staff will get Rs5 million each.

The petitioner in person Tariq Asad advocate has cited the federation through the Ministry of Sports and the prime minister of Pakistan through the principal secretary as respondents. The petitioner said the team won the trophy in England and they deserve appreciation but such an extravagance was unnecessary. Players have many other sources of income and they also get salaries and benefits for playing first class cricket for different departments, he added.

He said in Ahmedpur Sharqia more than 200 people were burnt to death and there was ** burns ward in any hospital. He said the public demand for establishing burns wards in hospitals was turned down by the prime minister with the remarks that it was very expensive. The petitioner said people need health and education facilities instead of wasting rewards in an extravagant way.
