BAHAWALPUR/MULTAN: The death toll of Ahmadpur East oil-tanker infer** reached 189 with six more victims succumbing to their injuries at the Nishtar Hospital, Multan, and Jinnah Hospital, Lahore, on Friday.

This was confirmed by Dr Aamer Mehmood Bukhari, director Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH) Emergency Ward and focal person for the tragic incident.

He said so far 64 bodies had been handed over to their families including those who were identified at the BVH after the mishap. Also, 10 injured were discharged from the BVH and other hospitals during the last 24 hours on their recovery.

The focal person said various people were still searching for their missing relatives and contacting him five days after the incident.

The rescue teams had airlifted a total of 65 injured to the Pak-Italian Modern Burn Unit of Nishtar Hospital, Multan. Out of which, 35 have so far succumbed to their burns, while 30 others are still under treatment. Dr Naheed Anjum Chaudhry, in-charge of Burns Unit, said that nine-year-old Muskan Bibi was relieved from the hospital after complete recovery. She had sustained 15 per cent burns.

The official confirmed that Farhan, 18, Abdul Khaliq, 42, Samiullah, 16, and Fahad, 12, succumbed to their injuries on Thursday night.

The incident took place when an oil-tanker overturned and later caught fire on the highway near Ahmadpur East while people were collecting the leaking petrol.

Meanwhile, the oil company has submitted its initial investigation report to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra). However, Ogra rejected the report, terming it incomplete. The authority had already activated the third party inspectors and was awaiting its findings.

The Shell report said: “Shell contracted Tank Lorry ** TLJ-352 involved in the incident. It was carrying 50,000 litres of motor gasoline. The Marwat Enterprises owned that oil-tanker and was taking the fuel from Keamari to Vehari.”

About the key factors, the report said: “The tank lorry was travelling at 35km/hr [We have the tracker report as evidence], which is within the speed limit.

“A passenger bus, after overtaking the tank lorry, applied harsh brake in front of the tanker. To avoid collision, the driver moved the tank lorry to left hand side of the road on the soft shoulder, which resulted in rollover of the tank lorry.”

It said, “Sadly, **t realising the huge safety risk involved, people from the nearby village gathered to collect the spilled product in buckets/containers. Despite utmost effort by the local traffic authorities to manage the incident, a chaos erupted, which resulted in such a grave tragedy.”
