Gmail has supported HTTPS since 2004 (an option to enable HTTPS as the default setting for a particular account was added in 2008) and in 2010, Google made HTTPS connections (http://mashable.com/2010/01/13/https-gmail/?utm_campaign=Mash-Prod-RSS-Feedburner-All-Partial&utm_cid=Mash-Prod-RSS-Feedburner-All-Partial&utm_medium=feed&utm_source=rss) the default user option.
