This is somewhat of an odd reappearance of the fourth-gen iPad. When the company introduced the iPad Air, it fully retired that version, but it left the iPad 2, originally launched in March 2011, as the entry-level model

One of the important differences between the two models is the lightning connector, which the iPad 2 didn't have.
