To say Wonder Woman (https://www.popsugar.com/Wonder-Woman) is crushing the box ****** right **w would be an understatement. Words like "obliterating" or "demolishing" are more apt, given the film's record-setting $103.1 million domestic opening (http://variety.com/2017/film/news/box-******-wonder-woman-opening-weekend-1202453353/) and its badass, empowering message (https://www.popsugar.com/entertainment/Wonder-Woman-Movie-Review-43592993). Everyone from Lupita Nyong'o (https://twitter.com/Lupita_Nyongo/status/870777102597062656) to Chris Hemsworth (https://www.popsugar.com/entertainment/Chris-Hemsworth-Tweet-About-Wonder-Woman-43605086) has been raving about director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot, and **w it seems the Hollywood gods have answered all of our prayers: Wonder Woman is getting a sequel! Barely any details have been released just yet, but thanks to The Hollywood Reporter's revelation that Gadot is officially contracted (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/complex-gender-politics-wonder-woman-movie-1008259) for a second film, it's definitely in the works. Here's what we k**w so far:
The Story
Wonder Woman begins on Diana Prince's home island of Themyscira and later moves to a Europe torn apart by World War I. For the sequel, Jenkins suggested bringing the superhero across the pond. "The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right," the director told Entertainment Weekly (http://ew.com/******/2017/06/04/wonder-woman-patty-jenkins-sequel-setting/) in a recent interview. "She's Wonder Woman. She's got to come to America. It's time." She also told THR that the sequel will be in modern times, which suggests it'll happen sometime after the events of Justice League (https://www.popsugar.com/entertainment/Justice-League-Movie-Details-40285733).
The Cast
Although we initially assumed Chris Pine wouldn't return as Steve Trevor given how his story ends, Jenkins seems to think otherwise. "All I can say is it was a dilemma," she told Fandango (https://www.fandango.com/movie-news/will-chris-pine-return-in-a-wonder-woman-sequel-heres-what-the-director-says-752352?cjid=cj_10504407_2470763_j3p408vz6000rbdo00 1nr). "It's something I hope we don't talk about in the public I want people to see, but it's very hard to k**w which characters will be in the next movie because of the time period, so it's a big question." Pine himself further fueled speculation in the same interview. "The movie's gotta come out, and then we'll see," he said before joking, "What about [B]Wonder Man?"
Regardless, leading lady Gadot will definitely be back to kick some ass. As far as other characters are concerned, making the story set in present day opens up the possibility of a few cameos from other DC characters (even if Wonder Woman only bothers with a single, subtle Justice League Easter egg (https://www.popsugar.com/entertainment/How-Does-Wonder-Woman-Connect-Justice-League-43600212)).
The Director
Unlike Gadot, Jenkins is **t contractually obligated to return for the second installment of Wonder Woman since Warner Bros. executives only enlisted her for the one film. According to THR (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/wonder-woman-director-patty-jenkins-**t-signed-sequel-1010845), sources revealed "the studio intends to begin negotiations with Jenkins shortly." Hopefully the rumors are true, because we can't imagine a better person for the job.
The Release Date
Settle in, you guys, because this is going to be a hell of a long wait. Before Warner Bros. can begin working on a sequel for Diana, it has to release Justice League (part one debuts on **v. 17, 2017, part two on June 14, 2019), as well as finish The Flash and Aquaman (https://www.popsugar.com/entertainment/Aquaman-Movie-Details-40738300) (due out March 16, 2018, and Dec. 21, 2018, respectively). If all goes according to plan, the Wonder Woman sequel would likely hit theaters in 2019 (maybe to compete with Captain Marvel?) or possibly even 2020.
