Says govt behind Nehal Hashmi’s threats; rulers fighting with national institutions; Khawaja Asif says their blood was included in struggle for independence of judiciary but courts are putting their hands on ‘our necks’; calls opposition leader ‘Rangbaz’
ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah and Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif had a tiff in the National Assembly during the budget debate on Friday when the former charged that the government was behind Senator Nehal Hashmi’s threats to the SC judges and the JIT members questioning the Sharif family.
Khursheed said the government was threatening the Supreme Court judges who had saved Nawaz Sharif. As Khursheed Shah charged that the government was behind Senator Hashmi’s threats to the Supreme Court judges and the JIT members, Khawaja Asif opened the salvo maintaining that it had happened for the first time in history that the political identity of a person was ended within an hour of making shameful comments.
“This shows our respect for and commitment to the constitutional institutions,” the minister claimed. Asif said the PML-N had given more sacrifices for strengthening the judiciary and they did **t need sermons by the opposition leaders.
The opposition leader charged that the PML-N leadership had insulted three Supreme Court judges through Nehal Hashmi who had directed the constitution of JIT to probe into the Panama papers’ allegations against Nawaz Sharif and his family.
“Had any other person uttered such remarks, he might have been hanged,” he said. The defence minister called the opposition leader 'Rangbaz'; however, Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq immediately expunged his remarks.
The minister protested against expunging his remarks saying 'Rangbazi' was an in**cent word and the speaker should **t give a ruling that the word was objectionable. “This Rangbazi will **t continue anymore Mr. Opposition Leader,” he said.
The speaker said the opposition leader was a respectable person and the word 'Rangbaz' should **t be used for him. Khawaja Asif said the opposition leader was **t the only respectable person in the House and that they were also respectable people. Asif insisted he would continue to call these people as 'Rangbaz'.
The speaker said there was ** meaning of word 'Rangbazi' in the English dictionary. Khawaja Asif said the PPP’s current leadership was bearing the fruit of Benazir Bhutto’s policies and was asking for inquiry into the murder of the slain PPP leader. “For God's sake, catch the murderer of Benazir Bhutto,” he said.
Asif said the PPP leaders never talked about the murder of Benazir Bhutto because they knew where the traces of the case lead to. He advised the opposition leader to take care of his party’s plight in the Punjab province where every day his party leaders continued to change their loyalties. He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had set such new traditions which would be remembered for centuries. “The prime minister bowed his head in respect of constitutional institutions despite having all the unconditional and constitutional indemnity.”
The defence minister said a man who talked about the umpire’s finger had put his hand in his pocket when the time came for his search. He said politicians abuse parliament for the sake of their interests but **body could support the words uttered by Nehal Hashmi who was immediately taken to task.
He said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif gave accounts of his three generations and both sons appeared before the JIT, one by one. The minister said the PML-N did **t create ‘Dogar Court’ and gave sacrifices for the sake of democracy.
“We also signed the Charter of Democracy and Murree Declaration for the same cause. Today, if the judiciary is so powerful, it is the fruit of our struggle and that of lawyers," the minister said.
He said since their blood was included in the struggle, that’s why the judiciary of today was more independent in making decisions and defending the institution.
He suggested the opposition **t to advise the PML-N, as it had been playing a great role for the last 12 years for strengthening the judiciary. He said the people who were **w making hue and cry were companions of military dictators at the time when the PML-N was struggling for democracy.
He said when the then President Asif Ali Zardari failed to fulfill his commitment to restore the judiciary within one month, the PML-N had left the coalition government to struggle for the supreme institution.
He said when the PML-N lawmakers were tendering their resignations in October 2007, the opposition leader was engaged in reaping the fruits of the NRO. He said the opposition leaders talked about strengthening of the 1973 Constitution but the members were thrown out of the House when it was being passed.
Khawaja Asif said they had given sacrifices for strengthening democracy. “Today, the courts are putting their hands on our necks legally and constitutionally and we should **t be given any lessons,” he said. The minister said he would support live coverage of proceedings of the National Assembly.
Earlier, speaking on a point of order, the opposition leader said the government was fighting with the national institutions and every patriotic Pakistani was worried about this. “The spokesman for the Prime Minister's House says the conduct of judges is unjustified. Fight with institutions takes the country to disaster,” he said.
He questioned as to who gave the courage to Senator Hashmi to talk in that way. He said such situations occur in rural areas where an accused was nabbed and then released to oblige him. “The same will happen in the case of Nihal Hashmi who may be appointed Sindh gover**r in two years,” he said.
Khursheed Shah said his party leaders sacrificed their lives for the sake of democracy but never hurled threats at any member of a constitutional institution. The opposition parties walked out of the House soon after the opposition leader’s speech.
Earlier, the National Assembly proceedings began 50 minutes behind schedule. The opposition leader questioned the delay in the start of proceedings. Only one speech on budget by Shaista Parvez of PML-N was possible on Friday and the proceedings were adjourned till Monday after**on.
