STONE TOWN, Tanzania: A 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing six people, including four tourists, on the Zanzibar archipelago off the coast of Tanzania, police said on Thursday.

The attack took place last Sunday in Zanzibar’s main city Stone Town, when a man armed with a knife entered a popular restaurant and stabbed the tourists and two Tanzanians who tried to stop him.

"We arrested him while hiding in a house in the Stone Town on Wednesday. He looks healthy, but it is alleged that he has a record of using *****. He will undergo mental tests before charged in court," said police spokesman Hassan Nassir Ali.

Officials initially said the suspect had a "mental disorder, caused by use of *****"

However Ali said Islamic extremism had **t been ruled out "but at this time we should avoid highlighting terrorism before investigation."

A Canadian man, two Germans and a Frenchman were injured in the attack. All have been released from hospital except the Frenchman who was stabbed near the eye.

Ali said the attack had "tarnished the image of Zanzibar as a safe place for all tourists."

The picturesque islands, which are semi-auto**mous, are famed for white-sand beaches and historical buildings in Stone Town, listed as a world heritage site by Unesco.

But tourism, Zanzibar’s main currency earner, has been hit by sectarian and political tensions in recent years.

In 2013 two British tourists and a Catholic priest were doused with acid in a ****** of attacks blamed on radical Islamists with ties to Somalia’s Shabaab, as the archipelago sees rising radicalisation.
