Royals To Sign Brett Tomko
The Royals and right-hander Brett Tomko (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/tomkobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com) have agreed to a mi**r league contract, according to a tweet (https://twitter.com/KoKwonDo/status/444228677899780096) from Tomko's brother, Scott. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (via Twitter (https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/444238687321067520)) that Tomko will earn $510K if he makes the big league club. Tomko is represented by Full Circle Sports Management.*Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish tweets (https://twitter.com/ChrisCotillo/status/444239230408359936) that Tomko, who was clocked as high as 93 mph in a bullpen session today, is willing to pitch at Triple-A and did **t receive any opt-out clauses in his deal.

Tomko hasn't pitched in the Majors since a brief 17 2/3 inning stint with the Rangers in 2011. The former second-round pick has accumulated 1816 innings at the Major League level, pitching to a 4.65 ERA with 6.0 K/9, 2.9 BB/9 and a 42.1 percent ground-ball rate.

MLBTR's own Zach Links talked with (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/01/brett-tomko-on-his-comeback-bid.html) the 40-year-old Tomko earlier in the offseason about his comeback bid. Said Tomko at the time: "I'll keep lacing it up until someone rips the uniform off of my back and says 'You're done.'"

The Royals' rotation is crowded with James Shields (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/shielja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com), Jeremy Guthrie (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/guthrje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com), Jason Vargas (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vargaja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com) and Bruce Chen (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chenbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com) as locks with Yorda** Ventura (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/ventuyo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com), Danny Duffy (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/duffyda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com) and Wade Davis (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/daviswa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com) as candidates for the fifth slot. The bullpen took a blow recently when Luke Hochevar (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hochelu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com) learned that he needs Tommy John surgery, but Kansas City still has plenty of options with Greg Holland (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hollagr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com), Aaron Crow (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/crowaa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com), Tim Collins (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colliti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com), Kelvin Herrera (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/herreke01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com), Louis Coleman (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/colemlo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com), Donnie Joseph (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/josepdo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com) and Chris Dwyer (http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?results=,dwyerch01&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com) all representing options for manager Ned Yost. Whichever two of Ventura, Duffy and Davis do **t make the rotation could be slotted into the bullpen as well.
