Soldier killed, 5 injured in Russian crash landing

MOSCOW: A Russian serviceman was killed and five others injured on Tuesday when their transport plane crash landed and caught fire after a training flight near the central city of Saratov, authorities said. Russia’s defence ministry said the incident, which took place at around 6:00 am (0300 GMT), could have been caused by failure of one of the engines of the plane, an Anto**v AN-26. There were six people onboard the aircraft when it made a hard landing at Saratov’s Balashov aerodrome, the defence ministry said in a statement quoted by Interfax news agency. The gover**r of the Saratov region said in a statement that the servicemen were taking part in a training flight. Soviet-designed AN-26 transport planes are widely used in Russia and the developing world. In 2013, nine died when an AN-26 plane crashed into a military warehouse complex in Siberia.

Poland extradites Austrian over Ukraine atrocities

VIENNA: An Austrian suspected of war crimes in eastern Ukraine’s civil war pitting government forces against Russian-backed separatists has been extradited from Poland, Austrian prosecutors said on Tuesday. The 25-year-old, named as Benjamin F., was detained in late April at the Polish border post of Dorohusk as he was trying to cross over into Ukraine. The ex-Austrian army soldier is alleged to have killed unarmed prisoners while fighting on the Ukrainian side in May 2016. Austrian authorities had issued a European arrest warrant in February after he gave an interview to Austrian newspaper Der Kurier about his activities in Ukraine.

May’s lead narrows slightly to 12 points

LONDON: British Prime Minister Theresa May’s lead fell to 12 percentage points in a poll published on Tuesday, the latest major survey since last week’s Manchester bombing showing the June 8 election could be closer than previously thought. The ICM poll for the Guardian newspaper showed the Conservative Party on 45 points, down two points from a week ago. The main opposition Labour Party’s share of the vote was unchanged at 33 percent. Six other polls carried out since the May 22 Manchester attack have shown May’s lead over the opposition Labour Party narrowing, suggesting she might **t win the landslide predicted just a month ago.
