Kashmiris hold demo outside White House
WASHINGTON: On the same day when US President Donald Trump was praising India’s role against terrorism in his Riyadh speech, hundreds of Kashmiris including women and children were protesting outside the White House to remind the president of Indian atrocities in Held Kashmir.
The protesters holding placards and banners inscribed with slogans and pictures of Indian pellet gun victims urged President Trump to press New Delhi on human rights violation in Kashmir valley where 0.7 million Indian army is deployed to curb freedom movement by majority Muslims.
“As leader of the free world, US has responsibility to support the just freedom struggle of Kashmiris and ensure implementation of the United Nations resolution on giving the Kashmiris right to self-determination,” said a protester, Imtiaz Khan, who is professor of microbiology in George Washington University.
He said the Indian government should realise that the world is **w aware of its crimes against in**cent Kashmiris. “India wants to hide the truth from the world community. That is why social media is banned in Kashmir for a month despite UN calls to restore it.”
As the freedom movement in Indian Held Kashmir (IHK) has gained momentum in last a few months, India has resorted to extreme use of violence against stone-throwing protesters. Pictures of protesting Kashmiri schoolgirls being subjected to baton charge and use of a Kashmiri youth as human shield by Indian army shocked the world last month.
Even the US media including The New York Times and The Washington Post has recently highlighted human rights violation by Indian forces in news coverage and editorials.
Prominent Kashmiri-American activist Ghulam Nabi Fai urged President Trump to listen to what India’s own diplomats, politicians and experts are saying on failure of Indian state in Kashmir.
“Don’t listen to Kashmiris, please, listen to what Indian former ministers are saying about failure of Indian repressive tactics in Kashmir,” he said while addressing the protesters outside the residence of US President.
Former president of Azad Kashmir Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry said the freedom struggle of Kashmiris was gaining international support as the world has witnessed barbaric use of force by Indian army against in**cent Kashmiris.
“We will continue to support the Kashmir cause and awaken the world conscience over barbaric killing of Kashmiris by Indian army,” Sultan said.
Speakers also lamented the mention of India in Trump’s speech to the Muslim leaders in Saudi Arabia as terror victim but the President’s failure to mention the state-sponsor terrorism by India in Kashmir.
Later, a candle light vigil was held to pay tribute to Kashmiri victims of state-sponsor terrorism. A large number of people from across the United States attended the protest. The protesters were chanting slogans like “We want freedom”, “Indian army out, out”.
“I have come all the way from the New York with my three children to express solidarity with Kashmiri brother and sister,” said Nargis Wajahat while talking to The News. She said United States has the responsibility to support the Kashmiri people as the country is torchbearer of freedom across the world.
A**ther participant Aamina Farid said she participates in all events that are organised in the United States to highlight Kashmir issue. “This year again we will also protest outside the United Nations headquarters in New York to call for the implementation of world body’s resolution on Kashmir,” she added.
