Light aircraft crashes in Bosnia, five dead
SARAJEVO: Five people, including three children, were killed in Bosnia on Saturday when a light aircraft they were travelling in crashed near the southern town of Mostar, police said. The accident occurred at 3.50 pm local time (13:50 GMT) and police, firefighters, paramedics and a prosecutor were at the site of the crash, a police duty ******r told Reuters. "Five people are dead, including a pilot and reportedly three children," the ******r said, adding that the aircraft had caught fire and that the fifth victim had **t yet been identified. Merkel wants close cooperation with Macron
AACHEN, Germany: German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday she wanted close cooperation with French President-elect Emmanuel Macron and that their two countries would do everything to shape European policy. "We will do everything **t only to help France but also to shape the European path with France," Merkel said in the city of Aachen near the border with Belgium. Macron holds talks with Merkel in Berlin on Monday, a day after his inauguration, with the aim of stressing the importance of the relationship with Germany to relaunching the European project.
US nears $100bn arms deal for Saudi Arabia
WASHINGTON: The United States is close to completing a ****** of arms deals for Saudi Arabia totaling more than $100 billion, a senior White House official said late on Friday, a week ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned visit to Riyadh. The official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of a**nymity, said the arms package could end up surpassing more than $300 billion over a decade to help Saudi Arabia boost its defensive capabilities while still maintaining US ally Israel’s qualitative military edge over its neighbours. The package is being developed to coincide with Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia. Trump leaves for the kingdom on May 19, the first stop on his maiden international trip.
Syrian army seizes airbase from IS
BEIRUT: Syria’s army captured an airbase in eastern Aleppo from the Islamic State group on Saturday, after more than two months of fierce clashes, a military source and monitor said. The Jarrah airbase had been under IS control since January 2014, when the Jihadists seized it from rebels who had captured it a year earlier. “Regime forces took control of the Jarrah military airport after heavy fighting,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor. “The majority of the Jihadists have withdrawn, and regime forces are carrying out clearing operations in the airport and engaged in limited clashes with remaining IS elements,” he added. Syria’s army launched an offensive against IS in eastern Aleppo province in mid-January, backed by ally Russia.
