Fair & Square

Fair and Square terms of this column are ‘Jutt speed and Jutt creed’ and the Jutt in discussion is **ne else other than the former deputy prime minister (DPM) and former Punjab chief minister, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi. Before I proceed, let me elaborate it is more of an analogy and doesn’t, at all, fall in the category of eulogy.

Analogy I draw from a number of terms coined recently by some of the self-styled worldly masters of our fate, whose names are suffixed **wadays with ‘speed’ and what **t.

And when I talk of ‘Jutt speed’ and ‘Jutt creed’, it is with reference to the recent claim made by the former DPM that if given a chance by the people of Pakistan (again) to form a government, their first priority would be building the Kalabagh Dam (KBD).

Probing this claim a little bit further, it was brought to my k**wledge by some Chaudhryites (whether it has any rhythmic or any other type of similarity to meteorites or Bhuttoites, it is for my intelligent readers to judge for themselves) that all throughout the period of opposition, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid or PML-Q as it is commonly k**wn, has worked out different plans for energy generation besides having studied some successful and practicable models of effective governance, adaptable within the Pakistani polity and eco**my.

These Chaudhryites surprised me by telling me that in this manner the PML-Q has acted like the sole opposition party that is always ready to make its contributions to the systems of governance and public affairs.

Should one thus draw the conclusion that as an opposition party, the PML-Q has matured e**ugh – or more than e**ugh- to k**w what the opposition actually means as is the case with political parties of successful democratic systems of the advanced world where the opposition works like a government in the waiting? Mind you, I used the word ‘works’, which means the opposition ‘works’ almost like the government evolving workable plans and even suggesting alternative plans to the government on ongoing development projects.

If this is so, then one can be justified in recommending to the leadership of other opposition parties including the mainstream opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to leave sloganeering and battles of technicalities and, instead, follow in the footsteps of far more mature and astute leadership of the PML-Q, which k**ws both the ‘sciences’, the ‘science of power/ government as well as the science of opposition’.

While concluding, I would also like to share one ‘leak’, leaked by Chaudhryites that during their incumbency, Chaudhrys had accelerated the work of reconciliation committee that was formed by the government of the day in addition to technical committee on the KBD. The reconciliation committee was tasked to address misgivings about KBD and bring about greater political reconciliation among different provinces and their respective leaders. Chaudhryites claim that the target had almost been achieved during those times, courtesy ‘Jutt speed and Jutt creed’.
