ISLAMABAD: The top leadership of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Thursday declared the Supreme Court verdict in the PanamaLeaks case a victory for Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.
Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz on Thursday hailed the Supreme Court verdict, saying the petitioners had failed to prove any allegation. After the an**uncement of the verdict, Maryam Nawaz in her Tweets said the apex court's verdict to form a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) for further probe had spelled out defeat for the petitioners.
She praised Allah Almighty and felicitated her father and the PML-N. "Mubarik! Wazir-e-Azam Nawaz Sharif,” she tweeted. Nawaz Sharif’s son Hasan Nawaz said he was thankful to Allah for the Supreme Court verdict.
“Alhamdollilah, I am grateful and thankful to Almighty Allah for the verdict,” he said while talking to Geo correspondent in London Murtaza Ali Shah. Hasan didn’t answer any further questions by the media and left for work in his car.
Separately, a source said Hasan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz will appear before the JIT when required and were ready to answer any kind of question.
Talking to the media outside the Supreme Court, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said: “Nawaz Sharif had written a letter to the SC for formation of a commission to probe into the matter and today the SC, by majority, an**unced the same decision that the PM had suggested six months ago.”
He said the SC verdict had proved that the proofs and witness accounts that the PML-N opponents presented before the court were insufficient and further investigation was required into them.
"I want to tell all those people who wanted the PM’s disqualification that Sharif will serve till 2018 and we are confident that he will also get reelected for the next five years," he added. Ahsan Iqbal said the verdict was a clear defeat for those trying to move against the mandate of the masses.
PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique said: “Once again, Nawaz Sharif, his team, PML-N, our voters, and all Pakistanis who are advocates of democracy have won.” He emphasized that the SC order to create a joint investigation team was the victory of the PM’s point of view. He said Nawaz Sharif was both ‘sadiq’ and ‘ameen’.
Minister of State of Information Tech**logy and Telecommunication Anusha Rehman said the PTI was able to fool its followers but failed to do the same in front of the Supreme Court. "Imran Khan must be held accountable for wasting the public’s time," Rahman said.
"He will pay for this in the 2018-election. Khan will lose the 20-25 seats that he presently has." Condemning the Supreme Court verdict in the PanamaLeaks case, the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) President and former president Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday said Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif must immediately step down.
“I condemn the Supreme Court decision and reject it, as today democracy and justice were adversely affected,” he said while addressing a press conference along with the PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari here at the Zardari House.
Opposition Leader in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah, Qamar Zaman Kaira, PPP Secretary General Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari, Senator Sherry Rehman and Senator Farhatullah Babar were also present.
Zardari said Nawaz should step down on ethical basis but he knew it well that he will **t resign till the end and their struggle will continue.
“A joke has been made with the people of Pakistan; however, the senior judges have given the finest decision. I salute the judges who declared Prime Minister Sharif ineligible to rule," Zardari said.
The PPPP leader said it was beyond him why the PML-N leaders were distributing sweets following the SC judgment.
“The senior judges in their judgment have declared that Nawaz Sharif is dishonest and **t eligible to rule but the PML-N is distributing sweets; they should be ashamed. Why are they distributing sweets? Because two senior judges have called for their disqualification; they have said that you are ** more ‘Sadiq and Ameen’,” he added.
Zardari said the PML-N should be ashamed of distributing sweets after the Panama verdict.
He questioned whether a grade 19 ******r will investigate the matter which the Supreme Court could **t do and whether they will investigate the prime minister and his family in their homes or will summon them to police stations.
“**w the nation will have to make a decision, as the present rulers are incompetent and have failed to govern the country,” he added.
Zardari said the PPP had asked Imran Khan to support them to take this issue to parliament to legislate the law and then go to the Supreme Court jointly but Imran Khan proved himself an "inexperienced politician’ and staged the drama benefiting Nawaz Sharif. "Nawaz Sharif capitalized on Imran Khan's theatrics and with going to the Supreme Court he saved Nawaz Sharif,” he said.
He said the people had seen the real face of Nawaz Sharif and **w the slogan of “Gali Main Shor Hai, Nawaz Sharif Chor Hai” was reverberating in the streets. To a**ther question about his and Bilawal Bhutto’s future plan to contest the by-election as an**unced on December 27 last year, Zardari said he would contest the by-elections.
Aitzaz Ahsan said the Supreme Court decision to set up a joint investigation (JIT) to probe the Panama allegations was tantamount to giving Nawaz Sharif a safe passage. "There will be ** use of forming the JIT while Nawaz remains in power," he said.
He said three other judges also had **t given the prime minister a clean chit. "I would say the Supreme Court has invoked the doctrine of necessity and kept its tradition of coming soft towards the Sharif family,” he added.
Asked if he still believed the judiciary was free after the judicial movement, Aitzaz said all he could say was that all those who had taken part in the historic lawyers' movement for the independence of the judiciary would be disappointed by the verdict.
He said the PPP and the nation never got justice from these judges. He questioned the progress made in the Model Town incident whereas verdict in the Asghar Khan Case was **t implemented.
Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah on Thursday said Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif should step down, as morally the Supreme Court verdict in the Panama case was against him.
“In my opinion, the decision is very clear … two senior judges of the Supreme Court have clearly given a decision, disqualifying the prime minister while three judges asked for investigation through the Joint Investigation Team (JIT),” he said while talking to the newsmen here.
Khursheed said the Supreme Court had ordered the constitution of the JIT and inclusion of NAB and FIA officials into it whom they did **t trust during the case hearing.
“What kind of investigation will be carried out by the personnel who are under the Interior Ministry and Finance Ministry?” he asked.
Asked if the PPP will approach the PTI for cooperation, Khursheed said there was ** last friend or foe in politics.
“The joint meeting of the opposition parties has been summoned on Friday (today) to formulate a joint strategy after examining the Supreme Court verdict,” he added.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan on Thursday asked Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif to step down until completion of investigation by the JIT against him and his sons.
Reacting to the SC decision in the PanamaLeaks case, he said Nawaz was ** more ‘sadiq and ameen’.
He **ted that the two senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, who were to become chief justices, had called for immediate de**tification of Nawaz as prime minister.
“Therefore, Nawaz is ** more ‘sadiq and ameen’, as he had lied to the nation about his assets abroad.”
Talking to the newsmen, he said all the five judges of the Supreme Court had rejected Nawaz’s reply on how money was transferred to buy flats in London.
“The explanation given by Nawaz about the source of money has been rejected,” he remarked.
He wondered why the PML-N leaders were enjoying sweets.
"Five SC judges have dismissed their defence. Is this what you are celebrating?" he asked.
Imran, who appeared confident and happy, pointed out that the five-member bench had consensus on further investigation through the JIT within 60 days and therefore there was ** moral authority or justification for Nawaz to stay in power, as he would face criminal investigation like Uzair Baloch.
Imran said: “If you are cleared within 60 days, you can return."
He congratulated the nation on the ‘historic’ ruling. "This has never happened in the history of Pakistan and I pay tribute to the SC judges for this judgement," he said.
"All the five SC judges have given decision that whatever Nawaz Sharif said has been rejected. The money trail, the sources of income everything is in front of the nation and in other words, it has been declared a falsehood," Imran emphasised.
He **ted the Sharif family would also be questioned by the JIT.
He said though the Supreme Court had declared NAB a failed entity, it would remain under Nawaz.
He wondered how the probe would be fair when all but the ISI and Military Intelligence would be under the prime minister.
Imran said if Nawaz did **t resign how the investigation would be fair.
“Will Nawaz save himself in the wake of JIT or pay attention to the grave challenges Pakistan faces today? There is ** other way than Nawaz's resignation and this is demand of the nation,” he asserted.
Pakistan Muslim League (PML) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Thursday said Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had lost the right to stay in ****** after the Supreme Court verdict.
“The court has **t given Nawaz a clean chit. **ne of five judges has **t declared him ‘Sadiq and Ameen’; therefore, he should quit the ******,” he said while talking to the media.
Senator Kamil Ali Agha, MNA Tariq Bashir Cheema, Mohammad Basharat Raja, Dr Khalid Ranjha, Syed Dilawar Abbas and Ajmal Khan Wazir were also present.
Shujaat said two SC judges had disqualified the prime minister for **t being “Sadiq and Ameen” while three other judges had also **t disagreed with their stance.
“Silence is half endorsement; they talked about further investigation and **t at all acquit the prime minister **r said that he (PM) was Sadiq and Ameen”.
In the light of the verdict, the prime minister has ** justification to remain in the ******.
"The decision of the two judges is the verdict of the whole Supreme Court and the voice of the heart of the nation.
"The two learned judges who have disqualified the prime minister are the future chief justices and we should **t ig**re them."
