SRINAGAR: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah on Saturday won the closely-watched by-poll for the Srinagar parliamentary seat, defeating People's Democratic Party's Nazir Ahmed Khan by a margin of 10,700 votes.

The polling was marred by widespread violence. Eight people were killed in police firing and over a hundred were injured in clashes between protesters and security forces on the polling day on April 9, the Indian media reported.

Abdullah received around 48,554 votes, while Khan got 37,779 votes, officials said. Voting for the parliamentary seat last week was marked by a record low tur**ut of 7 per cent and violence.

When the voting took place for a second time on Thursday, only 2 per cent voters turned up, the lowest in the history of the state. There were nine candidates contesting the seat, but it was seen as a direct contest between Abdullah and Khan.

Abdullah, 79, had lost the seat to PDP's Tariq Hameed Karra in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The seat fell vacant after Karra resigned from the PDP and the Lok Sabha -- he eventually joined the Congress which entered in a pre-poll alliance with the National Conference.

"These were the worst elections in history due to bloodshed. ** doubt I have won but we have lost precious lives that's why we are **t happy with this win," said Abdullah. Re-polling was held for 38 polling booths on Thursday which saw most violence -- but only 702 people turned up; in many booths, **t a single vote was cast.

Of the nine candidates for the Srinagar constituency, five had pulled out in protest because they wanted the re-polling to be delayed, alleging that the current unrest does **t allow for a free and fair election.

After schools that were to be used as voting centres were set on fire, and hundreds of protesters marched into voting centres shouting anti-India slogans on Sunday, the election from Anantnag, near Srinagar, was delayed to May.

Muhammad Saleh Zaafir from Islamabad adds: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Sunday said brute force was used against the in**cent people of Indian Held Kashmir (IHK) for **t participating in the fake elections for the legislative assembly.

He reminded the international community that it had to stop atrocities by the Indian forces and inhuman developments in the Indian Held Kashmir (IHK) through preventive diplomacy and allowing the Kashmir dispute to be resolved through a just and sustainable settlement.

The statement came in the backdrop of an increase in brutalities by the Indian troops in the IHK and virtually failed fake polls for the legislative assembly.

He called upon the international community to play itsrole for just resolution to the Kashmir issue according to the aspirations of Kashmiris. He said the world should play its role to stop human rights violations by the Indian forces. He said the Kashmiris had been deprived of their basic rights.

“Kashmir is for Kashmiris and a day will dawn when their due struggle will bear fruit.” The prime minister reminded that Kashmir was a paradise inhabited by citizens who had been consistently deprived of their right to decide their fate.

“Use of brute military might against in**cent people of Kashmir who refused to participate in the recent sham state elections can**t suppress their human urge of freedom,” Nawaz added. He maintained that there was hope for the people of Kashmir in this moment of immense distress and grief that their march towards freedom was unstoppable.
